How to Care for Your Custom Photo Mug

A custom photo mug is one of those small joys — your morning tea in a cup that shows a face you love. The print is durable, but a few easy habits keep that image as bright as the day it arrived. Here's how to look after it.

How the print is made

Most quality photo mugs are sublimation-printed: the image is fused into a special coating with heat, so it's part of the surface rather than sitting on top. That makes it tough — but heat and harsh abrasion are still its two enemies.

Washing: gentle wins

  • Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge whenever you can — it's the single best thing for longevity.
  • Avoid abrasive scourers and gritty powders; they can dull the surface over time.
  • If you must use a dishwasher, place the mug on the top rack and use a gentle cycle — but know that repeated hot cycles will fade any print eventually.

Heat and storage

Skip the microwave where possible, especially for mugs with metallic or gold detailing. For storage, don't stack heavy items inside or scrape the printed area against other crockery.

Treat a photo mug like a favourite shirt, not a work tool: a gentle wash and no harsh scrubbing, and it stays vivid for years.

If it ever fades

Prints last a long time with this care, but mugs are inexpensive to reprint. Keep your original photo file safe and we can make a fresh one whenever you like — or print the same image across a matching set so you always have a spare.
